Shade Lamp: A Touch of Nostalgia Illuminated

Björn Ischi's Award-Winning Design Marries Tradition and Innovation

Reimagining the quintessential lamp from our grandmother's living room, Björn Ischi introduces the Shade Lamp, a unique blend of nostalgia and cutting-edge technology. This design, a winner of the prestigious A' Design Award, is a testament to the transformative power of innovation in everyday objects.

The Shade Lamp is a novel take on a familiar object. Inspired by the traditional lamp with a yellowish lampshade and a thick stem, Ischi has breathed new life into this classic piece of furniture. The lamp's unique properties lie in its simplicity and functionality. It operates without a switch, responding instead to a simple touch on the "light bulb" to dim the light or turn it off. The lamp's versatility and universal appeal make it a standout piece in any setting.

Producing the Shade Lamp involves a combination of advanced technologies. The lamp is made from two 12mm Aluminum walls, cut with water-jet technology. CNC machining carves the inside of the walls to accommodate the wires. The lamp is equipped with the latest LED technology and a sensor mechanism for dimming the light, showcasing a perfect blend of tradition and modernity.

The lamp's design specifications further enhance its appeal. A removable cross footing allows the lamp to be placed in various positions, creating unique lighting effects. Whether standing, leaning against a wall, or lying on the floor, the Shade Lamp makes a statement. Measuring 1760mm in height and 490mm in width, the lamp is a substantial yet elegant presence in any room.

The Shade Lamp is more than just a light source; it's an interactive design piece. It can be used as a standing lamp, placed against a wall, or even hung up. Available in different colors and materials, the lamp can adapt to any style while maintaining its distinctive character. The LED technology casts a delightful and poetic shadow, adding a touch of whimsy to its surroundings.

The Shade Lamp project began in 2009, with the first prototype produced in Biel/Bienne, Switzerland, in July 2011. The design process involved a careful balance of preserving the nostalgic elements of the traditional lamp while incorporating modern lighting technologies. The main challenge was creating a new version of the old lamp without merely copying its shape. Once the desired shape was achieved, the next hurdle was ensuring the lamp's stability on its footing.

The Shade Lamp is a testament to Ischi's innovative design approach, earning the Platinum A' Design Award in 2013. This award recognizes world-class, exceptional, and highly innovative designs that contribute to societal wellbeing. The Shade Lamp, with its blend of nostalgia and innovation, truly embodies the spirit of this award.
